Description

The advertisement consists of a ‘mother superior’ nun guiding the recently new young nun around the nunnery. As they arrive at a holy shrine, they meet ‘elderly nun’ who is praying.

Mother Superior explains how the elderly nun has been complicit in a vow of silence for over 50 years.

The mother nun says, ‘Time for dinner, it’s probably not what you’e used to.’ The young nun agrees, and replies that in her old life, she’d usually order a takeaway. The elderly nun then shockingly breaks her silence with ‘Did somebody say Just Eat?’.

The advertisement was inspired by Just Eat’s infamous slogan ‘Did somebody say Just Eat?’. A line most heard in Just Eat’s popular musical adverts.

As production designer I wanted to make the most ouf of the location. The fact that we filmed in a real church, meant that it didn't require as much set designing. For example I covered the set in candles, but I was able to use the candle sticks that the church provided. The church was rather big, and funnily enough, resembled more of a church than a convent. The church needed to look like a convincingly secluded sanctuary, one you would expect to find a devout nun praying. We filmed only around the altar and chancel. With the use of tight close ups and medium shots, we could create the illusion that the church was a smaller and more intimate nunnery. Staying true to the brand, the warm lighting reflects Just Eat's signature colour, orange. We made the most out of the short 30 seconds that we had. The final shot incorporated a whip pan, providing a smooth transition and made the advert less rigid. Filming with the Kodak was a stylistic choice in itself. Shooting on film gave the advert distinct visuals with its warm and graining look. This also massively supported the dark sanctified atmosphere of a nunnery and overall worked best for our commercials plot.

The Vow of Silence won best brief for 'Just Eat', as well as second overall, at the National Nahemi Kodak 16mm Film Commercials Competition.
